Why Karaikal is different, and why we do it anyway
Karaikal is part of the Puducherry Union Territory but it is not near Puducherry. It sits about 140 km south down the coast, past Cuddalore and Chidambaram, in its own district with its own character. Administratively we are the same territory; logistically we are a three-hour drive apart.
A daily route there is not possible for a business of our size and pretending otherwise would waste everyone's time. What does work is a single well-loaded van on a Saturday against orders that were placed by Thursday evening — which is why the cutoff is Thursday rather than Friday. The Karaikal load is bought on Friday morning at the Puducherry farm gates, packed on Friday, iced overnight and driven down on Saturday. That means a Karaikal customer's vegetables are a day older than a White Town customer's, and we are not going to hide that either.
What survives the journey well: vegetables with a skin, staples, rice and millets, oils, jaggery, dry goods, whole fruit, eggs and hard cheese. What we restrict: leaf greens in the hot months, cut anything, and most seafood. A few species travel properly on ice and those are the only ones we will quote.
Who the Saturday run actually suits
Three kinds of customer make this work, and if you are not one of them the honest answer may be that you should not use us.
Households that buy weekly and plan. ₹1,500 is roughly a week of vegetables, fruit, dairy and staples for a family of four, which means the minimum is not an obstacle so much as a description of a normal weekly shop. The Family Box at ₹899 with a staples order alongside it is the commonest Karaikal pattern.
Guest houses, small hotels and messes. A standing weekly order from ₹1,500 with a GST invoice, delivered Saturday before the weekend turnover, suits a property that plans its week. Credit terms are the same as in Puducherry: 15 days after four settled weeks.
Households buying staples and native rice. The pantry categories — native rice, the five millets, cold-pressed oils, pulses, palm jaggery — are the strongest Karaikal lines, because they keep, they are hard to buy well locally and the distance costs them nothing.
If what you want is a ₹400 order of tomatoes on a Saturday morning, we cannot do it and you should buy locally. That is not us being difficult; it is a van, a driver and 280 km of round trip.
What travels and what does not
Travels well on this run
- Rice, millets, pulses, oils, jaggery — the whole pantry shelf, at the same price as in town
- Vegetables with a skin: gourds, brinjal, ladies finger, beans, carrot, potato, onion, pumpkin
- Whole fruit: banana, papaya, apple, pomegranate, coconut
- Eggs, ghee, hard cheese and packaged dairy
- Native rice and millets in 5 kg and 25 kg packs — the strongest Karaikal category
Restricted or not offered
- Leaf greens and salad between March and June — they do not arrive in a state we would sell
- Fresh farm milk, curd and paneer, which are same-day products
- Most seafood; only a few species that ice properly are quoted, and never prawns
- The Small Box at ₹499, which cannot clear the ₹1,500 minimum on its own
- Anything cut, chopped or prepared

Do you deliver to Karaikal?
Yes, on Saturdays only, between 9 am and 1 pm, with a Thursday 8 pm cutoff, a ₹1,500 minimum and a ₹120 delivery charge. Karaikal is about 140 km from our Puducherry packing table, so it is a scheduled weekly run rather than a route we are on every morning.
Why is the Karaikal cutoff on Thursday?
Because the Karaikal load is bought at the Puducherry farm gates on Friday morning, packed on Friday and driven down on Saturday. A Friday cutoff would mean buying on Saturday morning and arriving in the afternoon heat, which is worse for the produce and later for you.
Why is there a Rs 1,500 minimum in Karaikal?
A 280 km round trip for one van has to be covered by the load it carries. At ₹1,500 the run works; below that it does not, and a minimum is a more honest solution than a delivery charge large enough to make the point. For most weekly household shops ₹1,500 is roughly the normal figure anyway.
Is the produce as fresh in Karaikal as in Puducherry?
No, and we will not claim it is. Karaikal vegetables are bought at the Puducherry farm gates on Friday morning, packed and iced overnight, and delivered Saturday — so they are a day older than a Puducherry customer's. We restrict leaf greens in the hot months for exactly this reason.
Can I get fish delivered in Karaikal?
Only a few species that ice properly for the drive, quoted case by case, and never prawns. Karaikal has its own coast and its own landings, and buying fish locally there will beat anything we can carry 140 km. This is one of the clearest cases where we are not the right supplier.
Do you supply hotels and guest houses in Karaikal?
Yes, on a standing weekly order from ₹1,500 with a GST invoice on every delivery and the same credit terms as Puducherry — 15 days after four settled weeks. Saturday delivery between 9 am and 1 pm suits properties that turn over at the weekend.
Which box subscriptions work in Karaikal?
The Family Box at ₹899 and the Organic Box at ₹1,299, usually with a staples order alongside to clear the ₹1,500 minimum. The Small Box at ₹499 is not offered on this run because it cannot reach the minimum on its own, and adding a delivery charge to it would be poor value for you.
