What Puducherry can and cannot give you — the honest list
Half the value of this service is knowing what not to expect, so here it is before you book rather than after.
Easy and good here: vegetables, local fruit, eggs, curd, paneer, ghee, rice and millets, cold-pressed oils, coconut, filter coffee, tea, day-boat fish, salad leaves and herbs from the Auroville bioregion, and the jams, nut butters and preserves that the Auroville food brands make from surplus fruit. If your holiday cooking is built on these, you will eat extremely well.
Possible with notice: baguette and European-style bread (pre-order, and the good bakeries sell out), cheese beyond the basics, avocado, asparagus, particular lettuces, berries in season, imported butter, wine and spirits from the licensed shops rather than from us. Forty-eight hours' notice turns most of these from no into yes.
Genuinely hard: a wide imported cheese counter, reliable gluten-free baking, specific international brands, fresh cream in quantity in summer, and anything requiring a cold chain we do not run. We will say so rather than substitute something and let you discover it at 10 pm.
Not our business at all: alcohol. Puducherry's licensing is its own world and we are a produce delivery service; ask your host.
