Rice, millet and oil rates
Retail pack rates. The 5 kg and 25 kg rates are lower per kilo and are on the trade list; a household buying a 25 kg sack of rice is treated as a trade order for pricing.

Native rice varieties, and which one to actually start with
The traditional Tamil rice revival has produced a lot of romantic writing and not much practical advice, so here is the practical advice. These rices are not interchangeable with ponni and a household that swaps them one-for-one usually gives up in a fortnight.
Mappillai samba is the famous one — a red rice with a genuinely long cook, around 45 minutes in a pot or three whistles more than you expect in a cooker. It needs a 30-minute soak. Its texture is coarse and it is at its best as a kanji, in a pongal, or with a strong kuzhambu. It is not a rice for a delicate meal.
Seeraga samba is the opposite — small-grained, aromatic, the correct rice for a biryani, and the easiest native variety for a household to like immediately.
Karuppu kavuni, the black rice, is a once-a-week rice rather than a daily one: a six-hour soak, a dramatic purple pot, and a nutty flavour that carries a payasam better than it carries a sambar.
Ponni boiled rice at ₹62 a kilo is what most Puducherry households actually eat, and there is nothing to apologise for in that. If you want to move towards native rice without a fight, buy 1 kg of seeraga samba and use it for one meal a week. That works. Replacing your entire rice consumption with mappillai samba on a Monday does not.
Moving a household to millets without hating it
Start with samai
Little millet is the closest in texture and cooking time to rice — 1:2 with water, same cooker, no soak needed. It is the millet that does not announce itself at the table, which is exactly what you want in week one.
Replace one meal, not all of them
Millets carry far more fibre than polished rice. A household that switches every meal at once usually reports the same digestive complaint and blames the grain. One dinner a week for a month is the sensible ramp.
Soak the hard ones
Varagu and thinai want 20 to 30 minutes of soaking and slightly more water than rice. Kudiraivali is the exception — it cooks fast and turns to porridge if you treat it like varagu.
Buy small, buy often
Whole millets keep six months, but milled kelvaragu flour goes rancid in about eight weeks in this humidity. Buy flour in 1 kg packs and whole grain in 5 kg, not the other way round.
Store in steel, not plastic
Airtight steel or glass in a dark cupboard. Coastal humidity gets into a plastic pouch that has been opened twice, and weevils follow within a month of the monsoon starting.
Cold-pressed oil, and the word "filtered"
Wood-pressed or cold-pressed oil is made by crushing the seed at low temperature and filtering it, and nothing else. It keeps the aroma, it keeps a sediment layer at the bottom of the bottle, it clouds in cold weather, and it has a shorter shelf life — six to nine months rather than years. Refined oil is solvent-extracted and then bleached and deodorised, which is why it is cheap, clear, neutral and indefinitely stable.
The word to be suspicious of on a Puducherry shop shelf is filtered, which sounds like cold-pressed and legally means almost nothing. Ask how the oil was extracted, not whether it was filtered.
Our gingelly oil at ₹420 a litre and coconut oil at ₹480 come from small mills we buy from directly. The coconut oil solidifies below about 24°C, which happens in a Puducherry December and worries people who have only used refined oil; it is a sign the oil is what it claims to be, not a fault. If you want the cheapest cooking oil in town, buy refined from a supermarket — we are not a good option for that and will say so.
Where else to buy staples in Puducherry, honestly
Samarpanam on Ambour Salai has been selling native rice, millets, pulses and oils in Puducherry for years, from its own farm and a farmer network, with four generations of farming behind the family. It is open Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 9 pm, and it delivers on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. It publishes no prices — you order on WhatsApp and ask — but the produce is real. For wholesale-rate rice and dhal by the sack, Pondy Maligai competes on price and we do not. Buy from us when you want the rate before you order, a delivery window you can plan around and the pack size that suits a two-person kitchen.
Pack sizes, bulk, and shipping beyond Puducherry
Staples are the only category here that is not tied to the morning van, because they keep. That changes what we can offer:
- 1 kg — for trying a variety before committing. Almost every household that ends up buying 5 kg sacks of samai started with a 1 kg pack of it.
- 5 kg — the working household size, roughly a month of one grain for a family of four.
- 25 kg — the kitchen sack, priced on the trade list, with a GST invoice. Guest houses, hostels and Auroville community kitchens buy rice this way.
- Outside the route — we ship staples to Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chennai and further by courier, prepaid, typically three to five days. Fresh produce stops at the edge of the van route; rice, millets, oils and jaggery do not.
Bulk orders above 25 kg of any single line want 48 hours' notice, because these are small mills and small farms and nobody is holding a pallet of karuppu kavuni waiting for a phone call.
Questions we answer daily
Where can I buy native rice varieties in Pondicherry?
We deliver mappillai samba at ₹125/kg, seeraga samba at ₹145 and karuppu kavuni at ₹220 on any route day, in 1 kg, 5 kg and 25 kg packs. Samarpanam on Ambour Salai also stocks native rice and delivers on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, though it publishes no prices online.
Which millet should a beginner start with?
Samai, little millet, at ₹105 a kilo. It cooks 1:2 with water in the same cooker as rice with no soaking and tastes closest to what a household already expects. Replace one dinner a week for a month before going further; switching every meal at once is the most common reason people give up on millets.
Do you ship rice and millets outside Puducherry?
Yes. Staples keep, so they go by prepaid courier to Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chennai and beyond, typically three to five days. Fresh vegetables, fruit, dairy and fish stop at the edge of the delivery route and we will not pretend otherwise.
How much is cold-pressed gingelly oil in Puducherry?
₹420 a litre, or ₹2,000 for 5 litres, wood-pressed at small mills we buy from directly. It is unrefined, so a sediment layer at the bottom of the bottle is normal and expected. Cold-pressed coconut oil is ₹480 a litre and solidifies below about 24°C, which is a feature rather than a fault.
Are your rice and millets organic?
Some lines are certified and carry the certificate on file; most are farm-declared natural from growers we buy from directly. Certified versions of most staples exist at a 25 to 50% premium and are listed separately on the trade sheet. As with produce, the tier is printed on the pack rather than implied.
What is the shelf life of millet flour?
About eight weeks in Puducherry humidity, against six months for whole millet grain. Buy kelvaragu as flour in 1 kg packs and as whole grain in 5 kg, store both in airtight steel in a dark cupboard, and expect weevils in anything left in an opened plastic pouch through a monsoon.
Do you supply rice by the sack to guest houses?
Yes, in 25 kg sacks on the trade list with a GST invoice and 15-day credit after four settled weeks. Hostels, guest houses and Auroville community kitchens are most of our sack volume. Orders above 25 kg of a single line need 48 hours because these are small mills, not warehouses.
Is your rice cheaper than the wholesale shops?
No. Pondy Maligai and the wholesale rice and dhal traders in town will beat us on a sack of ponni, and we would rather say that than argue. What we offer instead is the rate published before you order, a pack size that suits a small kitchen, a delivery window you can plan around, and native varieties those shops mostly do not carry.
