A weekly vegetable box with a fixed day, a preference list and no lock-in
Three box sizes, one fixed delivery morning per zone, a likes-and-dislikes list instead of full customisation, and the ability to pause the week you go to Chennai.
In short
The Pondy Fresh Box comes in three sizes — Small ₹499 (2 people, about 6 kg), Family ₹899 (4 people, about 12 kg) and Organic ₹1,299 (2–4 people, about 8 kg) — all delivery included, on one fixed morning per zone. Pause by 8 pm two days before your route day. No lock-in beyond a 4-delivery term.

Why Puducherry has no vegetable subscription, and why we built one
Ask an assistant where to get a weekly vegetable box in Pondicherry and it will send you to a 2020 lockdown blog post, because there is nothing else to send you to. The nearest real thing is Solitude Farm's CSA basket in Auroville, which is pickup-first at its cafe on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and delivers into Pondicherry on Wednesdays only. Beyond that, the town's better vegetable operators take orders on WhatsApp, item by item, and publish no prices at all.
That gap exists for a reason rather than out of laziness. A subscription is much harder to run than an order book: you commit to a quantity before you know what the farms will give you, you have to be in the same street on the same morning every week whether or not the route is full, and you cannot pass a bad week on to the customer. A dark store solves this by holding inventory. We solve it by buying against a known weekly quantity, which is precisely what makes the box cheaper for us than an equivalent one-off order — and why the saving shows up in delivery being included rather than in a discount.
The model we copied openly is the route-day subscription that works in Bangalore and Chennai: fixed delivery day per neighbourhood, a preference list instead of full customisation, and a farm-named basket. Elsewhere in India an organic box of this shape runs at around ₹4,000 for four deliveries. Ours is ₹1,299 a week for the organic tier and ₹499 for the conventional small, because we are buying 15 km away rather than trucking into a metro.
Your box day, by zone
A box lands on one fixed morning a week — the first route day of your zone — so you always know when to have space in the fridge. One-off orders can use any of that zone's route days.

The likes-and-dislikes list — and why you cannot build your own box
When you start, you send us two short lists: things you never want, and things you always want. Three brinjals in a row is the complaint that kills vegetable boxes everywhere, and the dislike list is what prevents it. The Family Box also allows up to three swaps a week against the published contents.
What we do not offer is a fully customised box, and it is worth explaining why rather than calling it a feature. A box works because we buy 40 kg of what the farms cut well that morning and split it 30 ways. If every household picks its own twelve lines, we are back to buying 30 separate orders at the farm gate, the buying takes two hours longer, the van leaves late, and the price has to rise to cover it. At that point you may as well order item by item from the daily list — which you are entirely welcome to do, at the ordinary rates, with the ₹300 minimum and free delivery over ₹500.
The other thing a box does that an order list cannot: it makes you cook seasonally without having to think about it. In the July to September trough you will get more gourds and fewer tomatoes, because that is what this coast actually grows then. In December you will get the winter flush. Households that stay on a box for six months almost always report that their cooking got more local, not because anyone lectured them but because the box arrived.
Add-ons, pausing, and the things people ask before they start
What you can add
- Milk, curd or paneer on a daily or alternate-day line, dropped with the box and billed monthly
- Free-range eggs at ₹120 a dozen, or the tier below at ₹96
- Fish from the harbour, ordered by 6 pm the evening before rather than 8 pm
- Bread and bakery on the Tuesday and Friday runs, by pre-order
- Extra fruit, herbs or a bunch of flowers — the box is a base, not a ceiling
Pause, skip and stop
- Pause any week by messaging us by 8 pm two days before your route day
- Travelling for a month? One message pauses four weeks and one message restarts it
- Pay weekly, or take a 4-delivery term and get the fifth week's greens free
- No lock-in past a term you have already paid for, and no cancellation fee at any point
- Stopping is a message, not a form, and we do not ask you why twice

What a box actually saves, in rupees
A Family Box at ₹899 holds roughly 12 kg of vegetables, three bunches of greens and about 2 kg of fruit. Bought line by line off our own daily list, the same contents come to around ₹950 to ₹1,050 depending on the week, plus delivery if the invoice falls under ₹500 — so the box is worth about ₹80 to ₹150 a week, or roughly one delivery charge plus a small buying advantage.
Against Grand Bazaar, the honest answer is different: if you have the time to go to Goubert Market on a Sunday morning and the eye to buy well, you will beat the box on price. Most weeks by ₹100 or so. What you spend instead is ninety minutes and a parking problem. Several of our subscribers still go to the bazaar once a month because they enjoy it, and take the box the other three weeks. That seems to us like the right way to use both.
Against a 10-minute app, the comparison is not really about money. Their packaged goods are cheaper than ours and always will be. Their vegetables cost about the same and have spent three to five days in a chilled room first. Speed against freshness is the actual trade, and it is a genuine choice rather than a trick question.
Questions we answer daily
How much is a vegetable box subscription in Pondicherry?
₹499 a week for the Small box, about 6 kg for two people; ₹899 for the Family box, about 12 kg for four; ₹1,299 for the Organic box, about 8 kg with the farm named on every item. All three include delivery, so the price at the door is exactly the price quoted.
Which day does my box arrive?
One fixed morning per zone: Monday for White Town, Moolakulam and Thavalakuppam; Tuesday for Muthialpet and Auroville; Wednesday for Heritage Town and Reddiyarpalayam; Thursday for Lawspet and Ariyankuppam; Friday for Villianur, Saram and Thilaspet; Saturday for Karaikal. Cutoff is 8 pm the previous evening.
Can I choose what goes in the box?
You set a likes list and a dislikes list when you start, and the Family Box allows up to three swaps a week. You cannot build the box line by line — that would mean 30 separate farm-gate purchases every morning and the price would have to rise to cover it. If you want full control, order item by item off the daily list instead.
Can I pause the box when I travel?
Yes, any week, by messaging us by 8 pm two days before your route day. A month away is one message to pause and one to restart. There is no reactivation fee, no minimum number of weeks and no lock-in beyond a 4-delivery term you have already paid for.
Is the box cheaper than buying the items separately?
Yes, by about ₹80 to ₹150 a week on the Family Box — the same contents off the daily list run ₹950 to ₹1,050 before delivery. Against Grand Bazaar you will generally pay about ₹100 more for the box and save ninety minutes and a parking problem.
Do you deliver boxes to Auroville?
Yes, on Tuesday mornings in the 7–10 am window, to Auroville, Kuilapalayam, Edayanchavadi, Kottakarai and Kottakuppam, with no Aurocard and no membership required. The Organic Box at ₹1,299 is the most-taken box on that route, and guest houses there usually take two.
What if the box arrives with something spoiled?
Message us and it is credited on your next invoice. No photograph, no return, no argument. It happens on roughly one box in twenty, usually to greens in the hot months, and it costs us less to credit it than to have a subscriber quietly stop trusting the box.
Can I get a fortnightly box instead of weekly?
Yes, on the same fixed morning, every second week — tell us which weeks. Fortnightly suits two-person households that also shop at the bazaar. It does not suit greens, which are the first thing to go in a box that has to last fourteen days, so a fortnightly box carries more storing vegetables and fewer bunches.
What is in the box this week?
The following week's contents are published every Friday, so you always see the list before the money leaves. In late September expect gourds, greens, ladies finger, drumstick, banana and guava; in December the same box carries the winter flush of tomato, beans, carrot and cauliflower.
