Where these vegetables actually come from

Puducherry grows paddy, maize, pulses, sugarcane, chillies, bananas, mangoes, groundnut, tapioca and gingelly, and almost none of that harvest has ever had a website. The commune villages that matter for a vegetable order are south and west of the town: the Bahour belt for tomato, brinjal, ladies finger and banana; Villianur and Mouroungapakkam for beans, drumstick and greens; Kirumampakkam for coconut. Our buyer is at those gates by 5 am, before the load is aggregated and before it goes into anyone's cold room.

Two lines on the table are honestly not local and we label them that way. Carrot and potato come down from the Nilgiris, and onion is trucked in from the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka belts — there is no serious onion crop within reach of Puducherry. Anyone telling you their onion was picked in Bahour this morning is selling you a story. We would rather tell you the truck route.

What the short chain changes is shelf life, not price. A tomato that was on the vine on Thursday evening and in your kitchen on Friday morning lasts the week. The same tomato through a dark store has typically spent three to five days in chilled storage before it is picked for a 10-minute order, and it goes soft on day two in a Puducherry September.

What is on the vegetable van

Three shelves, one route. Everything below is priced on the daily list; the exotic shelf has its own page because it is bought on a different cycle.

Everyday vegetables

The 20 lines a Puducherry kitchen actually runs out of — tomato, big and small onion, potato, brinjal, ladies finger, drumstick, beans, carrot, cabbage, cauliflower, chow chow, ash gourd, snake gourd, ridge gourd, raw banana, plantain stem, ginger, garlic, green chilli and curry leaf.

  • Priced daily
  • Bahour and Villianur gates
  • Weighed, not eyeballed

Keerai and greens

Six keerai varieties on the standard list — thandu, mulai, arai, ponnanganni, murungai and pasalai — cut the same morning and sold by the bunch. Greens are the one category where a day's delay is visible to the naked eye, so they are packed last and dropped first.

  • By the bunch
  • Cut after 5 am
  • Wrapped in cloth, not plastic

Exotic and salad

Broccoli, zucchini, coloured capsicum, iceberg, rocket, basil, parsley, celery, button mushroom and English cucumber. These are not Bahour crops; they come up on a weekly cycle and some weeks an item genuinely is not available at a quality we will sell.

  • Weekly inbound cycle
  • Pre-order for guaranteed lines
  • Priced per 100 g or piece

Order cutoffs, windows and what delivery costs

How the timing works

  • Cutoff is 8 pm the evening before your zone's route day — that is when the buying list goes out to the farms
  • White Town, Heritage Town, Muthialpet, Lawspet, Auroville and Kottakuppam get the 7–10 am window
  • Reddiyarpalayam, Moolakulam, Saram, Thilaspet, Villianur, Ariyankuppam and Thavalakuppam get 8–11 am
  • On a route day, an order placed before 11 am can join the 4–7 pm top-up run in the same zone
  • Karaikal is a Saturday-only run, 9 am to 1 pm, with a Thursday 8 pm cutoff

What it costs

  • Household minimum ₹300 per delivery
  • Delivery free on ₹500 and above inside Puducherry city, Auroville and Kottakuppam
  • Flat ₹40 below ₹500; ₹120 on the Karaikal run, which also carries a ₹1,500 minimum
  • UPI, card link or cash at the door — no membership, no card, no app download
  • Short weight or a spoiled item is credited on your next invoice without photographs

Storing what arrives, in a Puducherry kitchen

Coastal humidity is the reason most vegetable advice written for Delhi is useless here. A few things that genuinely change how long your order lasts:

  • Keerai goes in cloth, not a bag. Wrap the bunch in a damp cotton cloth and keep it in the vegetable drawer. Sealed plastic in 80% humidity turns thandu keerai to slime in a day.
  • Tomatoes stay out of the fridge until they are fully ripe. Bahour tomatoes arrive at the turning stage precisely so you get three or four days out of them.
  • Onion and potato must not share a basket. Potatoes sprout faster next to onions, and in September both go off in a week if they are stacked in a closed cupboard.
  • Drumstick keeps better whole and unrefrigerated for two days; once cut it dries out fast. If you have bought a kilo, cut only what the sambar needs.
  • Coconut, once opened, goes in the fridge the same day. A whole Kirumampakkam coconut will sit in a corner for two weeks quite happily.

None of this is secret knowledge. It is the sort of thing a Grand Bazaar vendor tells you if you buy from her often enough, and it is worth more to your grocery bill than any discount code.

We are not the fastest option in Puducherry, and we will not pretend to be

Zepto and Swiggy Instamart both run city pages for Puducherry and Blinkit runs two dark stores here. If you need onions in ten minutes at 9 pm, use them — genuinely. What none of those three can do is tell you which farm gate your tomato came from or hand you a bunch of keerai cut after 5 am this morning, because their model requires the stock to be sitting in a dark store before you order. That is the trade we are asking you to make: one night of planning for one day of freshness.

Questions we answer daily

Do you deliver vegetables the same day in Pondicherry?

Yes, on your zone's route day. Order by 8 pm the previous evening and the vegetables are bought between 5 and 6 am and delivered in your 7–10 am or 8–11 am window. If you order before 11 am on a day we are already in your zone, we can usually add you to the 4–7 pm top-up run.

What is the minimum vegetable order?

₹300 per delivery for households. Below ₹500 there is a flat ₹40 delivery charge; at ₹500 and above delivery is free across Puducherry city, Auroville and Kottakuppam. The Karaikal Saturday run is different: ₹1,500 minimum and ₹120 delivery, because it is a 140 km round trip for one van.

Are your vegetable prices cheaper than Grand Bazaar?

No, and we publish the Grand Bazaar range next to our own rate so you can see the gap. Expect to pay a few rupees a kilo more — our tomato is ₹32 against a ₹28–36 market range. You are paying for the 5 am buying trip, the weighing and the delivery, not for a cheaper tomato.

Can I order vegetables without a subscription?

Yes. Roughly half our households order line by line on WhatsApp and never take a box. The Pondy Fresh Box from ₹499 a week exists because it makes procurement predictable, not because one-off orders are discouraged. Both ride the same morning van.

Which vegetables are actually grown near Puducherry?

Tomato, brinjal, ladies finger, drumstick, gourds, greens, banana and coconut come from the Bahour and Villianur communes and Kirumampakkam, within about 20 km. Carrot, potato, beans out of season and cabbage come from the Nilgiris, and onion is trucked from further north. Each line on the price list says which.

How do I know the weight is right?

Every item is weighed on a digital scale at the packing table and the weight goes on the invoice that reaches your WhatsApp before the van leaves. If a 1 kg pack of beans reads 940 g at your kitchen scale, message us and the difference is credited on the next invoice. We do not ask for a photograph.

Do you sell cut or pre-chopped vegetables?

No. Cut vegetables need a chilled chain we deliberately do not run, and in Puducherry humidity they lose more in eight hours than a whole vegetable loses in three days. We will clean and trim greens and cut a pumpkin or ash gourd to a requested size, but nothing is diced in advance.

What happens if a vegetable I ordered is not good at the farm gate this morning?

We do not substitute silently. The buyer messages you from the gate with what he can see — the alternative, the price difference, or a straight removal from the invoice. On roughly one order in twelve something gets swapped, and it is always your call, not ours.
