How to buy Auroville organic produce when you are not an Aurovilian
Auroville grows some of the most credible organic produce in India and sells almost none of it in a way an outsider can actually buy. This page explains why, and what we can put on your doorstep instead.
In short
Auroville's produce is sold through Food Link (Mon–Sat 10 am–3 pm, no cash — Aurocard or Auroville account only), members-only Pour Tous outlets, and farm order forms. PondeFresh buys from bioregion farms and delivers to Auroville, Kuilapalayam, Edayanchavadi, Kottakarai and Kottakuppam on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 7–10 am, paid by UPI, card or cash.

Why buying Auroville produce is so strangely difficult
Auroville is a township of 3,527 residents from 61 nationalities — 1,702 Indian, 401 French, 227 German, 164 Italian, 100 American, 96 Dutch — sitting a few kilometres north of Puducherry with fifty years of organic farming behind it. It has farms with genuine composting practice, certified holdings, a dairy, orchards, a bakery culture and a preserves industry. It also has, for anybody without a membership, almost no way to buy any of it.
This is not secrecy. It is the natural result of an internal economy that was designed for residents rather than for customers:
- Food Link is the central collection and distribution point for Auroville farm produce — it supplies the collective kitchens, the restaurants, the schools, the processing units and the Pour Tous outlets. Its retail market runs Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 3 pm. And the line that ends the conversation for most visitors: cash is not accepted; payment is only through an Auroville account or an Aurocard.
- PTPS, the Pour Tous Purchasing Service, serves Aurovilians and Aurocard-holding guests. PTDC is members only.
- Solitude Farm runs a real weekly CSA basket with a salad kit — pickup at its cafe on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and delivery into Pondicherry on Wednesdays only.
- Auro Orchard publishes a weekly harvest list and takes orders on a form. Annapurna Farm is IMO-certified and runs separate order forms for residents and for guests. HERS, next to Ganesh Bakery in Kottakarai, carries a limited Auroville-grown selection.
- Auroville.com is the only proper e-commerce in the ecosystem, and it sells shelf-stable goods only — honey, nut butters, coconut oil, jams, pickles, cookies, roughly ₹85 to ₹650. No fresh produce at all.
- Naturellement makes forty-odd handcrafted jams, syrups, nut butters and pickles from Auroville surplus fruit, has demand as far as Chennai, and has no online shop whatsoever.
So the picture is: India's most credible bioregional organic supply, behind a payment card that refuses cash, weekday daytime pickup windows, members-only counters, one delivery day a week, and a set of Google Forms. If you are one of the roughly 1,800 non-Indian residents, or a guest house owner in Kuilapalayam, or a Lawspet family that wants certified greens, the produce is four kilometres away and functionally out of reach.

When you should skip us and go to Solitude Farm instead
If what you want is the farmer relationship — standing in the field, knowing the person who cut your salad, eating at the cafe afterwards — Solitude Farm's weekly basket is the better purchase and we will tell you so on WhatsApp. Their Wednesday delivery into Pondicherry is genuine and their blog on local food and seasonality is worth more than anything we will write. We exist for the household that needs a fixed morning window and a price before it commits, and for the guest house that needs 40 kg on a Tuesday whether or not anyone can drive out.
What we can put on your doorstep from the bioregion
We buy from farms in the Auroville bioregion and the villages around it — Kuilapalayam, Edayanchavadi, Kottakarai, the Kottakuppam side — on a standing weekly arrangement rather than by walking into Food Link with a card we do not hold. What comes off that arrangement is narrower than Food Link's full range and we would rather set the expectation properly:
- Salad and leaf. The strongest line by a distance. Lettuces, rocket, mustard leaf, basil, mint and two keerai varieties, cut the evening before and packed in cloth overnight. This is what Auroville's farms are genuinely better at than anyone else within 100 km.
- Herbs. Basil, parsley, coriander, lemongrass, curry leaf. Sold by the bunch or per 100 g for kitchens.
- Everyday organic vegetables. Tomato, brinjal, gourds, okra, beans, greens — in lumpy quantities that depend on what was cut. The weekly availability list on WhatsApp is the honest version of a catalogue.
- Eggs. Free-range eggs from the bioregion, by the half-dozen and dozen, on the Tuesday and Saturday runs.
- Pantry. Cold-pressed oils, native rice, millets, jaggery, and the preserves-and-nut-butter shelf that the Auroville brands built out of surplus fruit. Shelf-stable, so we can hold it and you can order it any day.
What we cannot do: sell you anything from inside PTDC or Pour Tous, promise Food Link's full range, or get you into an outlet you are not entitled to enter. Where a product only exists behind a membership, we say so instead of sourcing a substitute and letting you assume.
How the bioregion route actually runs
Monday evening: the cut list
We send the farms what has been ordered for Tuesday. They cut on Monday evening rather than Tuesday morning, because leaf cut in the cool of the evening travels better than leaf cut into the heat.
Tuesday 5.30 am: collection
The van collects from the bioregion farms, then loads the Bahour vegetables and the harbour fish that the same households ordered. One van, one invoice, three sources.
6.45 am: labels
Each bag is weighed and labelled with the farm name, the cut date and the tier — certified or farm-declared natural. The invoice goes to your WhatsApp before the van leaves the packing table.
7–10 am: the drop
Kuilapalayam and Edayanchavadi first, then Kottakarai and the Auroville residential areas, then Kottakuppam and the ECR side. Guest houses and community kitchens are dropped before breakfast service.
Thursday and Saturday: the repeat
The same route runs again on Thursday and Saturday. A standing order means you never place one; you just message us when you want to change something.
For Auroville guest houses, cafes and community kitchens
A guest house in Kuilapalayam feeding fourteen people breakfast has a supply problem that neither Food Link nor a national wholesale platform solves well. Food Link's window is 10 am to 3 pm, which is the middle of your working day, and its counter is built for residents. The one serious B2B platform operating in Puducherry is built for chain restaurants and cloud kitchens and has no organic line at all — which is precisely the thing an Auroville kitchen cannot compromise on.
What we run instead: a standing weekly list, from ₹1,500 a week, delivered before service on your route mornings, with organic tier and farm named on the invoice, a GST bill every time, and 15-day credit terms after four settled weeks. Certificates for the certified lines are attached to the trade price list, because your guests ask and sometimes your own auditors do.
Questions we answer daily
Do I need to be an Aurovilian to order from you?
No. That is the entire point of this page. Auroville's Food Link takes only an Auroville account or an Aurocard and does not accept cash, and PTPS and PTDC are for cardholders and members. We sell to anyone in our delivery zones and take UPI, a card link or cash at the door.
Do you deliver to Auroville guest houses?
Yes, and they get the first drops on the route, between 7 and 8 am, before breakfast service. Guest houses in Kuilapalayam, Edayanchavadi, Kottakarai and Kottakuppam usually run a standing weekly list from ₹1,500 rather than ordering item by item.
Which days do you deliver to Auroville and Kottakuppam?
Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings, 7 to 10 am, with the order cutoff at 8 pm the previous evening. That is three mornings a week against Solitude Farm's single Wednesday delivery into Pondicherry, which is the main practical difference between the two options.
Is your produce actually from Auroville farms?
The bioregion line is, and each bag names the farm it came from. The rest of your order — the Bahour vegetables, the harbour fish, the Nilgiris carrots — is not, and is labelled accordingly. We do not describe a Villianur tomato as Auroville produce because it was delivered on the Auroville run.
Can I buy Naturellement or Auroville brand products through you?
We carry the shelf-stable pantry shelf — cold-pressed oils, preserves, nut butters, native rice — on the same van. Naturellement itself has no online shop and Auroville.com sells shelf-stable goods only with no fresh produce, so for anything outside what we hold you are still looking at a drive to the Garden Cafe or a national shipment.
Why can't I just go to Food Link myself?
You can visit, Monday to Saturday between 10 am and 3 pm. Whether you can buy is a different question: payment is only through an Auroville account or an Aurocard and cash is not accepted. Visitors regularly drive out, fill a basket and discover this at the counter.
Is your organic produce from Auroville certified?
Some farms hold current third-party certificates and those items are labelled certified organic, with the certificate available on request. Others are farm-declared natural — grown without synthetic inputs on holdings too small to carry certification costs. Both tiers are named on the bag, and the price differs between them.
Do you deliver to Periyamudaliarchavadi and Bommayapalayam?
Yes, on the same Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday bioregion run, as extensions of the Kottakuppam leg. Tell us the landmark you are near when you first order and we will confirm which end of the 7–10 am window you fall in.
What does the Organic Box cost in Auroville?
₹1,299 a week for about 8 kg, enough for two to four people, with delivery included and no separate charge for the bioregion run. It carries ten vegetables with the farm named on each, salad leaves, basil, two keerai varieties, one organic fruit and six free-range eggs.
